City of Mist
Every city has its myths.
Somewhere between the rain-slicked downtown canyon and the sourceless, shadowless daylight of Happyville, something ancient decided to put on a coat and get a day job. The City of Mist is a modern metropolis like any other — traffic, coffee, people who don't make eye contact — except that beneath the surface of ordinary life, the legends are waking up. Gods, monsters, folk heroes, and primordial forces have incarnated into flesh, walking around with mortgages and complicated feelings, slowly remembering what they are.
They're called Rifts, though that's not a word anyone uses. You might be one. You might have always been one.
The rest of the population — the Sleepers — moves through the City in a comfortable fog, the Mist doing its quiet, relentless work of making the impossible look like a gas leak or a trick of the light. It's the world's most effective cover story: reality itself, conspiring to keep its own secrets. And somewhere underneath all of it, beneath the neon and the noise and the accumulated weight of ten thousand forgotten legends, something older than the City is watching to see what happens next.
So far, nobody's had good news.
